in the process of figuring out exactly what I want/ need or can afford.
Have about 8 acres of mostly grass, some brush that I have to keep mowed. was wondering what JD model fell into the 25-30 hp range and would handle a 60 or 72 inch bush hog?

I agree... I don't think you'd want to go any smaller than a 4310 with that size brush cutter. However, if you are only planning to cut grass, you dont necessairly have to buy a CUT. ....

If are talking pto hp and that is the important hp. 30 to 35 pto hp is the sweet spot to run most implements and a 6' rotary cutter. You may want to consider the John Deere 990 or the Kioti DK 35/40. ....

the 790 30 hp would be great due to the large acrage (little stopping/turning around) .but thats a large lot, i believe that a dedicated mower like a TORO grounds master once you clear the brush is more up to SPEED unless you need a ct for other general maintainance. ....

If you are only brush-hogging, then a nice used 790 or 990 would be perfect and affordable. If you want to do more, look into a JD 4310. I have a 4310 and love it. I used it to mow my main yard, clear snow, haul dirt, move rock, etc. ....

I'm running a 4310 with a 72" mid mount mower. It has just slightly more power than the 4210. I have no problems. Like anything, if you go through tall grass you have to slow down. Hydro is great for adjusting on the fly. But I can still mow at higher speed with the 72" deck uphill in taller grass than my old mowers.
You should be fine with a 4200 or 4210. ....
